The Sporting Sale 2013
Copley Fine Art Auctions’ Sporting Sale 2013 was held on July 30-31 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The sale brought $2,245,191 with nearly 90% of lots sold. The top decoy lot was a pair of red-breasted mergansers by Ira D. Hudson (1873-1949), which brought $207,000. Copley set a new world record for an Ogden M. Pleissner (1905-1983) watercolor entitled Quail Shooting (see image to right). The work doubled its high estimate of $60,000, bringing $120,750. Two of the artist’s other works each split the uprights, coming in at $48,875 on their $40/60,000 estimates.
