John Tax Feeding Goose decoy

The Winter Sale 2011

Copley’s Winter Sale 2011 was the company’s first foray into the Big Apple. The sale took place on January 17th in Wallace Hall at St. Ignatius Loyola on Park Avenue. The spacious venue was open and airy and had surprisingly good light for a church basement. The viewing of the 430 lots kicked off Saturday morning with a steady crowd coming to study the paintings, decoys, and other related folk art for sale. The preview hit its crescendo on Saturday evening with over 450 guests in attendance for a special Scotch and Smoked Salmon Cocktail Preview. The auction achieved over $1,550,000 in sales.

The top lot in the sale was a feeding Canada Goose by John Tax (1894-1967), of Osakis, Minnesota, circa 1917, which sold for $115,000 (see image at right).
